On Monday, July 2, NASA officials answered questions about the Orion spacecraft in a live television broadcast from followers of NASA's social media accounts. NASA's Orion program reached a major milestone on June 28, 2012, when the first space-bound Orion crew capsule arrived at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Construction on the spacecraft was finished at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in Louisiana this week, and final outfitting and heat shield installation will take place at KSC. The Orion spacecraft will carry astronauts farther into the solar system than ever before. It will provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during the space travel and provide safe re-entry from deep space. This spacecraft will fly on Exploration Flight Test-1, an unmanned test that is ...

Follow Jamal Andress: http://www.twitter.com/jamalandress See more at http://www.newsy.com Transcript: The latest advances in spaceflight are taking their cues from ancient technology. The nonprofit Planetary Society is preparing to test LightSail, a fuel-less solar sail. Despite its name, a solar sail doesn't use the charged particles of the solar wind. Instead it catches the tiny but constant pressure of photons — the light itself — to build up speed. "Sunlight, or light, even though it has no mass, has momentum. So it can push these things through space. It’s a really extraordinary idea," CEO Bill Nye said. (Video via The Planetary Society) LightS...

Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier is the 2012 anthology by Neil deGrasse Tyson covering his various writings relating to the history and future of NASA and space travel in general. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0393350371/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0393350371&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=3116d9b9ac64e3d45c2335c8ba178369 Tyson intended the book's original title to be, Failure to Launch: The Dreams and Delusions of Space Enthusiasts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Chronicles:_Facing_the_Ultimate_Frontier Tyson's research has focused on observations in cosmology, stellar evolution, galactic astronomy and stellar formation. He has held numerous positions at institutions including University of Maryland, Princeton University, the American Museum of Natural History, and Hayden Planetarium. Tyson has written a number of popular books on astronomy. In 1995, he began to write the "Universe" column for Natural History magazine. In a column he authored for the magazine in 2002, Tyson coined the term "Manhattanhenge" to describe the two days annually on which the evening sun aligns with the cross streets of the street grid in Manhattan, making the sunset visible along unobstructed side streets. Tyson's column also influenced his work as a professor with The Great Courses. In 2001, US President George W. Bush appointed Tyson to serve on the Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry and in 2004 to serve on the President's Commission on Implementation of United States Space Exploration Policy, the latter better known as the "Moon, Mars, and Beyond" commission. Soon afterward he was awarded the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest civilian honor bestowed by NASA. In 2004, he hosted the four-part Origins miniseries of PBS's Nova, and, with Donald Goldsmith, co-authored the companion volume for this series, Origins: Fourteen Billion Years Of Cosmic Evolution. He again collaborated with Goldsmith as the narrator on the documentary 400 Years of the Telescope which premiered on PBS in April 2009. As director of the Hayden Planetarium, Tyson bucked traditional thinking in order to keep Pluto from being referred to as the ninth planet in exhibits at the center. Tyson has explained that he wanted to look at commonalities between objects, grouping the terrestrial planets together, the gas giants together, and Pluto with like objects and to get away from simply counting the planets. He has stated on The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, and BBC Horizon that this decision has resulted in large amounts of hate mail, much of it from children. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) confirmed this assessment by changing Pluto to the dwarf planet classification. Daniel Simone wrote of the interview with Tyson describing his frustration. "For a while, we were not very popular here at the Hayden Planetarium." Tyson recounted the heated on-line debate on the Cambridge Conference Network (CCNet), a "widely read, UK-based Internet chat group" following Benny Peiser's renewed call for reclassification of Pluto's status. Peiser's entry, in which he posted articles from the AP and Boston Globe spawned from the New York Times's article entitled 'Pluto's Not a Planet? Only in New York'. Tyson has been vice-president, president, and chairman of the board of the Planetary Society. He was also the host of the PBS program Nova ScienceNow until 2011. He attended and was a speaker at the Beyond Belief: Science, Religion, Reason and Survival symposium on November 2006. In 2007, Tyson, who is known for his vibrant character, cheerful demeanor, and awe of the vastness of the universe itself, was chosen to be a regular on The History Channel's popular series The Universe. In May 2009, he launched a one-hour radio talk show called StarTalk, which he co-hosted with comedienne Lynne Koplitz. The show was syndicated on Sunday afternoons on KTLK AM in Los Angeles and WHFS in Washington DC. The show lasted for thirteen weeks, but was resurrected in December 2010 and then, co-hosted with comedians Chuck Nice and Leighann Lord instead of Koplitz. Guests range from colleagues in science to celebrities such as Gza, Wil Wheaton, Sarah Silverman, and Bill Maher. The show is also available via the internet through a live stream or in the form of a podcast. In April 2011, Tyson was the keynote speaker at the 93rd International Convention of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the Two-year School. He and James Randi delivered a lecture entitled Skepticism, which related directly with the convention's theme of The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril, and Promise. In 2012, Tyson announced that he would appear in a YouTube series based on his radio show StarTalk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_deGrasse_Tyson

This spacecraft will fly on Exploration Flight Test-1, an unmanned test that is scheduled two years from now.

Future Aerospace students had the opportunity to speak live with an International Space Station Mission Controller at the Johnson Space Center via satellite with Seattle Washington's Museum of Flight. During the collaborative event between Destination Station, a traveling exhibit and the Aerospace Camp Experience and NASA, the students of various elementary, middle school and high schools had the opportunity to ask questions about living and working in space. NASA DLN broadcasts are connecting students around the country with the live mission operations being conducted by the International Space Station Flight Control Team. Typically, ISS flight controllers, astronauts and scientists answer student's questions about living and working in space including experiments and science related projects, how the Houston mission control center operates, and a wealth of other topics related to Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Presented on Halloween (October 31st) at Stack Overflow’s 2016 Remote Meetup in Philadelphia. #PhillyCheeseStack If you want to try landing the shuttle for yourself for fun, try F-Sim http://www.f-sim.com/ (I have no affiliation... just a fan). Sorry about the autofocus (we disabled it in later talks). Me running around on stage didn't help. As always, send complaints to Steve. If you're interested in more details on reentry and landing, I also wrote an answer on Stack Exchange Aviation: http://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/21981/how-does-the-space-shuttle-slow-down-on-the-re-entry-descent-and-landing/23889#23889 --- This was one of nine "Tiny Talks" given over three days at the meetup. Every year, employees submit Tiny Talk ideas on a wide range of topics (some completely random and not company-related at all, like this one) and we vote on which ones we want to hear. So, thank you to my coworkers for voting me in. Original proposal description I submitted for this talk: Let's say you're traveling at about 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 km/h) in low earth orbit, your main engines are out of fuel, and it's your job to guide the spaceship through a fiery re-entry without burning up or skipping out of the atmosphere, navigate to your landing site, and arrive with just enough energy to make an unpowered landing on a runway which is halfway around the planet from where you started. And, of course, either you succeed on your first try, or everyone dies. So, no pressure…. In this talk, I'll show you how space shuttle designers, pilots, and autopilots managed to do just that. --- All real-life photos and videos (except the last slide) were produced by NASA. Everything that looks hand-drawn was done by me on a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet in ArtRage. Animations were done in After Effects. Between the concept, outline, script, artwork, animations, rehearsals, and editing, I spent somewhere around 200 hours over two months working on it. Very little time was spent researching. In case it wasn't obvious, I've been more than a little obsessed with the topic for years now.

LightSail is a proof-of-concept solar sail from The Planetary Society. It's the latest of several tests of solar propulsion technology. (Video via The Planetary Society) LightSail will be packed into a tiny payload called a CubeSat. It's hitching a ride to orbit aboard the launch of the U.S. Air Force's X-37B spaceplane test platform Wednesday. This showcases one of the benefits of a solar sail. Not needing fuel reduces both the expense and the overall risk of a given launch. Jason Davis, of the Planetary Society, explained to Space.com: (Video via The Planetary Society) "The group buying the rocket — the primary payload — they get a little bit nervous about, say, 10 miniature fuel banks on your CubeSat when they have a multimillion-dollar payload sitting on top of it." The Planetary Society is sharing its data with NASA, which is pursuing the tech for many of the same reasons. Another benefit: Sails can reach crazy speeds. One of the lead engineers on the LightSail project told Wired it's enough for interplanetary travel and maybe beyond. (Video via NASA) "The absolute best mission is to use conventional propulsion to get as close to sun as possible. Then deploy your sail. By [the] time you get to Mars, you're just screaming, and you can dump the sail." NASA tested the concept with the NanoSail-D back in 2011. It was comparatively tiny — 100 square feet — but still reflective enough to spot with the naked eye from the ground. (Video via NASA, NASA’s Marshall Center) Japan's space agency made the first successful interplanetary sail flight with IKAROS, which stretched more than 2,000 square feet and made a flyby of Venus before orbiting the sun. (Video via Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) NASA now has two other sail missions in the works: Lunar Flashlight will send a sail to orbit the moon, where it will reflect sunlight to illuminate craters on the dark side in search of water. And NEA Scout will act as a proof of concept for propulsion to nearby asteroids. LightSail's first test, meanwhile, is doomed to burn up in Earth's atmosphere. It won’t get high enough to escape the planet’s gravity for more than a month or so. This video includes images from NASA and Wikimedia Commons.
